Springtime as well as summer, fall and winter planting and harvest continue here on our central coast of California fields. It is amazing to watch the fields being continually worked year around. Right now our strawberry harvest is in full swing…and they are being shipped throughout the country week by week. This reminds me of the Scripture that says, “Keep preaching the Word, be instant in season and out of season” (I Tim. 4:2)…and another “always abounding in the work of the Lord” (I Cor. 15:58). So, the Kingdom work is never to cease…day by day, week by week…we must continue the kingdom efforts…for this is God’s plan that we work now “while it is day, for the night is coming when no man can work” (John 9:4).
Jesus Work…Field Work
When Jesus saw the multitudes without a shepherd….he was moved with great emotion and he said “Pray ye the Lord of the harvest, that he might send forth laborers into the harvest” (Matt, 9:37,38). The focus must be on preparing workers because, as Jesus said, “The harvest is plenteous, but the laborers are few.” The great need is not massive evangelistic events, not social programs to keep people occupied, not maintaining a great facility…but, training followers who will begin to work the field where they live. The work of the harvest is to let the “Word become flesh” that through our personal life our friends “might see the Light (good works the true proof) and be persuaded to embrace the truth for themselves and thereby “glorify our Father which is in heaven.”
Personal Work...Field Work
Rather than organizing grand and unique programs which take immense amounts of effort, why could we not invest our lives in personal work among those God has put in our lives. Meeting with people God has placed in our life circle…where we live, where we work, where we shop, where we exercise or enjoy recreation. This takes training, planning, and time…who has God put in our life…how are we going to spend quality time with them. What are we going to share with them to help them come to the light and begin to grow in their personal faith? This is what our desire is among the people God has put in our lives…that the work of the kingdom will become a lifestyle…that everyday a new plan is formulated as to who do I pray for, who do I call, who do I invite into my life, who do I meet with, who do I help, who do I train.
We are trying to teach the followers in our fellowship by example and words that the ministry of Christ is in the world…in the community where we circulate. So many good things are in process as people learn that hospitality (just taking time for people) is the first step in the work of the kingdom. Followers are learning to open their homes to others, to schedule times to meet with friends or co-workers, to assist other families who have special cares or needs. We are extremely pleased as we see new followers getting involved in helping and showing kindness to those with whom they have developed friendships.
Praying and Planning…Field Work
Making a prayer list of those in our life that need to begin the faith life or need to grow in the faith life is so essential. What we don’t schedule or prepare for will only remain good intentions. A list is basic to the process…to have it in a viewable place…and reflect on it often. Each day life happens…and the momentum builds…to complete what is urgent becomes our priority. As we pray for people we must receive insight from the Lord as how to best connect with the ones we are led to help. We must consider numerous options as to when and where we will connect with others. This is so important because when we contact them we must mesh two sets of schedules. This is not always simple to do…God must be in the process intersecting two busy lives.
Making Appointments…Field Work
Whether in person , by phone or messaging…it takes work and persistence to schedule yourself into the life of another. It may take great patience and time, but it is necessary if we are going to do it. It may be at a lunch time, or after work, or before work that we will be most successful in setting appointments. If we do not become skilfull at this we may never disciple others. Sometimes it may take a lot of effort to keep rescheduling before it happens… God is developing some workers here on the central coast…we are so grateful to see the shepherding of individuals expanding…followers helping others come to faith and then making sure they keep growing in their faith. Let’s intensify our efforts to reach our field before it is too late…let’s pray those in our life circle into the kingdom now!
