Bracing Ourselves from Hurricane Irma

Bracing Ourselves for Hurricane Irma

The whole island is preparing for what some are calling the largest hurricane to ever hit the island.

The government is evacuating people from some of the most vulnerable areas, and the streets are full of people who are hustling and bustling, anxiously collecting food, water, candles, and whatever they think might help them get through this storm.

Many friends from the states have sent us messages of concern.  We so appreciate your prayers for us and for all those who will be affected by the hurricane.

We believe we will be safe here in our home.  We have seen the street in front of our home flood many times before in a heavy rain, but it has never made it to our front step.  Joselo brought home some sand bags just in case the flooding should come up that high.

There isn't much more we can do - wait, pray for the safety of our friends and neighbors and put our trust in God who is far bigger than this storm.

Thanks to all who are already praying, waiting and watching with us.  We are blessed.

It has been several months since our last newsletter.  Time is simply flying by.  We are having so much fun serving God here in the Dominican Republic as a family of four.

Evan is a laid-back, happy baby whose smile can light up a whole room.  He is now rolling and reaching for objects.  Before we know it, he will be crawling.  Elliot just turned 3!  He spends his days playing cars, hide-and-go-seek, and running, jumping or climbing whenever he gets the chance.
Joselo's classes tied him down here in the Dominican Republic, but I had a quick trip back to MN with the boys this summer.  It didn't look like it was going to be possible, but then through a friend God provided a donation for airplane tickets, and we are so thankful!

I introduced Evan to my family and celebrated my grandfather's 90th birthday with him in person!   I was also able to attend the Global Leadership Summit at my home church in Monticello.  It was a wonderful trip!

Discipleship Graduation

Our discipleship class in Santo Domingo came to an end in June. On our last day, we invited all the students and their families to our home for a special celebration.

Youth Ministry

The youth ministry in Hato Mayor is as strong as ever.  The new team members have jumped right in and are doing a fantastic job with the kids.  The older team members are mentoring them, and we are all dreaming together about how we can continue to expand and reach more children and families with the Gospel.

In the past few months, in addition to the weekly classes with kids, the team leaders organized a special worship service in which they united the youth leaders of all of our communities.  They packed the church and praised God together.  It was a special service that won't be forgotten anytime soon!
The youth have also been busy hosting special parent-child events in all the communities in which they teach.

Parents were invited to come to class with their children and worked together in games like the 3-legged race, musical chairs, an egg-on-a-spoon relay and a special "do you know your parent/child?" trivia game.

We worshipped together, and then listened to a teaching about the value of a close relationship between parents and children and how both parents and children can help cultivate a trusting relationship.

Here are a few pictures of the special day below.

Hair and Teeth

In one of the communities, the youth teachers saw a need for an outreach tailored around personal hygiene.  We got our whole team together, bought shampoo, combs and toothbrushes, loaded a truck with buckets of water and went to work.  All the girls got their hair washed and styled, and all the boys got a haircut.

Then we spent the afternoon together, eating lunch, playing games and worshipping.  It was a fun day - a nice way to spend some quality time with the kids and teach them a little about daily personal hygiene at the same time.

Mission Team - What an impact!

Last week we hosted a team from Resurrection Lutheran Church in Monticello, MN.  This team spent themselves in many ways while they were here, giving of themselves over and over again through several activities in the intense Dominican heat.

Perhaps, their greatest impact, however, was the difference they made in one particular family who lives just down the road from us.

It was like one of those programs on HG TV.  Imagine if you can a family of six living in an 11'x11' room, crammed with two beds, a stove top, refrigerator and a "bathroom area".  There is no ventilation in the room, and the roof leaks every time it rains.

God heard their cries for help, and this team had compassion on them.  With the help of God, they gathered the funds necessary and our construction team was able to build another room on the front of the house giving them some kitchen space and a bathroom with toilet, sink and a shower.

Then they repaired the ceiling of the old part of the house, put in a new floor, painted the walls, and blessed the family with a few household items and new beds for everyone!  It was amazing!!

I visited the family yesterday as the construction crew was finishing the bathroom and putting in the last doors and windows.  The family is still pinching themselves and praising God for His provisions.

Here is a before and an after picture of the bedroom.  What an absolute delight to get to be a part of this incredible blessing!
