Eric has begun his volunteer internship at Malone University as an assistant football coach. So far he is helping out with some recruiting. He also found out that he will be coaching one of the positions (inside linebacker for those who know football). After only a couple of weeks he has returned home to go to the Czech Republic to help with a football camp the coach from his alma mater will be leading there. He just left today and is excited about taking his first trip outside the US. His coach has been involved with this type of trip for several years, and sees it as an evangelistic trip as well as a trip to teach about football.

Our son Neil and his new wife Lori Anne have been married now for a little over a month, and they seem to be doing well. They have an apartment not too far away and they stop by to see us once in a while.

One of the main family events of this month was Thanksgiving. Karen came home from college and was here for a week before she had to go back to school. Our church orchestra played at our Thanksgiving service held the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. We had six of the seven of us playing in the orchestra. Since Karen was home from school, she played and Jeannette played in the orchestra for the first time in about a year and a half. The director, who will be leaving our church for another ministry in another church in January, asked Jeannette to play and she agreed to play for one last time. It was a wonderful service. For Thanksgiving dinner, we had all five of our children, our son Neil’s fiancé, Jeannette’s brother, Jeannette’s parents, and the two Chinese students who are staying with us this year. Along with Jeannette and I, that made 13 around the table. It was a great time of fellowship with family and friends.

Since I have been away in Zambia since October 15, I don’t know what has been going on as well as if I had been at home. I can report that my son Neil bought a used car, a Toyota and he likes it a lot.

After being in Zambia for 3 and a half weeks with rather poor internet connections, it is good to be back home with a much better internet connection. Some have suggested that a fast internet connection should be added to the hierarchy of basic needs. At least now I don’t have to email Jeannette to communicate with her. Of course not too many years ago, fast communications with some one overseas was done with an expensive phone call, and not too many years before that, it was a hand written letter sent by postal service via ships. I guess I should be grateful for a flakey internet connection since that is nearly instantaneous (when it works) and so much faster that a letter via ship.

I (Neil) have not experienced all that has been going on at home over the last three weeks or so because I have been in Mongu, Zambia at a Luke Partnership Workshop here. I’ll say more about that under work, but most of what I know about family this month came from Jeannette via email. And I missed about two weeks of communications with her because I had work on my contact list, consolidating some duplicate email addresses and in the process messed up her address. I was sending emails to someone, but it was not Jeannette. I just hope someone found the email interesting or funny. The internet connection here is very slow and cuts in and out, and about all it has been good for is email. Any attempts at searching for information via browser was almost useless.

Jeannette traveled to Greensboro, NC to hear Karen featured as she played a movement from a concerto, accompanied by one of the orchestras at the music camp. Karen did an excellent job and traveled back home just a couple of days later. She and her sister, Esther, and a friend traveled about two hours north to spent a weekend at the lake home of one of Jeannette’s uncles. While there, Esther traveled about two hours to play in the orchestra on the first weekend of a music celebration of a small town. They just returned last night and enjoyed their trip greatly.

Jeannette and I drove about 12 hours in early November to hear Karen play her sophomore recital on flute. She did an excellent job and we enjoyed hearing her play. We have also gone to hear Esther play on several concerts this month, including an ensemble concert where she played with her woodwind quintet and a concert with one of the bands she plays in. Esther is considering a double major in Music Performance and Business/Accounting. There are some careers that would use both her interest and abilities in music and management and accounting skills. Pray with her as she makes this decision.

There's not much new to report on the family front. Neil (III) is doing substitute teaching in addition to teaching band one day a week in a private school. He has been fairly busy with the substitute teaching and has been subbing four days a week most weeks, which is good. John's audition for the Cincinnati orchestra did not go as well as he hoped and he was not invited back for the final round. Eric has heard that the ministry in New Orleans has a place for him, but he is trying to decide if that is what God wants him to do or if it is only what he wants.

Karen is attending the Eastern Music Festival, beginning on June 22 and will be coming home toward the end of July. So far the music festival (or camp) has been an enjoyable experience for her. Esther has been at home so far, enjoying time with friends, playing volleyball and practicing clarinet. She will be leaving early next week to go to a clarinet masterclass and workshop for about 10 days, and then will be leaving just a few hours after she gets back for a mission trip to Slovenia for another ten days.
