Esther (on clarinet) and Karen (on flute) both had wonderful Senior Recitals. Karen traveled home to play on one piece with Esther, and Esther traveled to Karen’s school to hear her recital. Karen will graduate this weekend, and Jeannette and I will be going there to see her graduate and to help her move back home. Esther’s graduation is at least a year away, because in addition to a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance, she is also getting a business degree.

John arranged a six-piece jazz piece for a full 17-piece jazz band, and a high school jazz band played it last month. Later this month, a local professional jazz band will play it as well.

While I was in Zambia, Karen and Esther had their spring break together at home. I missed being here for Karen being home, but I will be seeing her at her Senior Recital at the end of April. She will be graduating the next week so we will be making two 12 hour one-way trips to see her. Esther will have her Senior Recital a couple of week before Karen. Esther will not be graduating this year, but will be continuing another year and a half or so to get a degree in Business as well as her Bachelor of Music Performance degree.

Karen has finished all of her graduate school auditions. It was quite a marathon of traveling from one coast to the other with stops in between. She was accepted into two of the schools she auditioned for, and now has to make a decision as to which one to go to.

Karen is looking into grad schools now, since she will be graduating this Spring. She plans to continue on flute performance. She has five auditions on flute at grad schools, all of the auditions being in February. Her first one was this week and she said it went very well.

We had all our children home for Christmas. Karen came home from her university and Eric came home from Malone University where he is an assistant football coach. Our son Neil’s wife, Lori Anne, graduated from university on the 18th with a degree in Art and we celebrated her graduation on the 20th.

Karen was home from out-of-state for Thanksgiving and we enjoyed her being here. We had 17 people at Thanksgiving dinner, including all of our children, except for Eric who was in Ohio. Our two Chinese students were also here. We also had Jeannette’s parents, her brother Brad and one of his sons with his son’s wife and son and Brad’s daughter with her boyfriend. A big celebration for all of us. Brad was surprised by two of his children being here since they usually don’t come to our family get-togethers.

We have several projects we need to do around our home including repairing some rotten windows and getting gutters installed on part of our house. I was working on getting all those things set up before I left for Zambia on October 21. We now have those projects set up, but there is still work to do on them before they are finished.

School is underway for Karen and Esther and things seem to be going well for them. Neil III is teaching band at several schools. John has added several music students and is still playing with several music groups. Eric is an assistant football coach with Malone University. Jeannette and I went to see Eric’s team from Malone play football.

The biggest family happening this month was Jeannette and I taking a vacation in Hawaii. Since the 4th grade, when she wrote a 50 page paper, she has wanted to vacation in Hawaii. We spent 9 days on the beautiful Garden Island of Kauai. We stayed in a wonderful ocean front condo and were able to travel over much of the island. We saw Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. We went tubing and saw a lot of different sights while we were there. Neither of us wanted to come home when the time was up. It was a busy time and when we got home, we needed a few days to recover from the pace we kept in Hawaii as well as the jet lag. Jeannette is still tired from the trip and from all she has to do around home. Pray for her to find times to just rest.

Comings and goings describe our summer break time. Both of our Chinese students left in June to go home for the summer. Yuan left on June 15 and Maggie left on June 26. Yuan will be going to another school in the fall and will be staying with a host family that lives a lot closer to that school. Maggie will be back on August 17, the day Jeannette and I leave for a 10 day vacation in Hawaii. Karen was in Pittsburg for a flute master class for a week in June and left last week for another masterclass/music camp somewhere in New England.

The major event this month was Jeannette traveling to Germany. She spent two week there, visiting Karin, a friend and former co-worker who lives near Stuttgart. She enjoyed the time away and got to travel to many places in Germany via train and spent part of a day in Paris, traveling there and back by train. One reason for going to visit was to find out for certain if her friend Karin was a believer and to share the Good News with her friend if she was not a believer. Jeannette was able to talk with Karin and found out that her friend was not a believer, but that she was interested and wanted to read the Bible. Jeannette shared with her and got her set up with a Bible app on her iPad. Her friend is moving back to the US and Jeannette hopes to be able to share with her more. Pray for Karin.

This was a month for lots of traveling and music. We traveled 12 hours to hear Karen play in an opera (the Magic Flute, and Karen was the principle flute player and played the real flute when the onstage person played the fake flute), then came back home to hear Esther play in a concert with her college wind ensemble, then went back to Karen’s school to her her junior recital on flute and host her after-recital reception, then back home to hear Esther play in her junior recital on clarinet and host her after-recital reception. Then we heard the local professional orchestra play a wonderful concert at the end of the month.

In the past week, we had wonderful celebrations at our church for Good Friday and Easter. The new worship leader did a great job with the services, with the orchestra and choir at both services. This year only two of us, Esther and I (Neil), played in the orchestra. John played in the Good Friday service and Neil (III) attended, but they both played at other churches on Easter Sunday.
