The Aftermath: Hurricanes Maria and Irma

Emmanuel

After Hurricanes Irma & Maria

My family and I were safe and really unaffected by hurricanes Irma & Maria compared to many other families on the island.  The norther part of the island was hit the worst by both hurricanes.

During Hurricane Maria, Hato Mayor, home to the youth from Shalom church who we work with regularly, received 500 millimeters of rain.  It was the province that received the most rain on the island, and there was so much flooding.

Families who live near the river tell stories of their homes being under water and watching their furniture and other belongings wash away in the river.

The youth had an activity planned for children in one of the communities the day after the hurricane.  We cancelled that and used the money to purchase bags of food for families affected by the storm.

The first picture on the left was taken in Hato Mayor during the storm and sent to me afterwards.  The other three pictures were taken the day after Hurricane Maria when the youth distributed food.

Last weekend we went to another area in Hato Mayor near a river where the flooding was high during the storm.  We went with some of the youth again and a mission team visiting from California.  We distributed a few bags of food.

The people are grateful for the food.  They will have food to eat for a week or so, but they are still just overwhelmed and unsure how they will recover.

We remind them that God is with them, He loves them and that He has them in His hands, to keep holding on and trusting in Him.  The needs are big in these areas.  We wish we could do more.

We choose to keep praying for them and those around the world who have been affected by the different tragedies that have occurred in the last several months.
Other Ministry Updates
Home Visits.  The youth leaders have been intentional about getting to know the students and their families more outside of the classroom.  Each Saturday, they take time to walk home with a few kids and get to know their families.  This is one of the families they have visited recently.
This month we also had the privilege of working along-side a mission team from San Diego, California.  They are part of a program through Bethel Seminary for pastors and leaders working in hispanic churches.  The spanish-speaking team was prepared, passionate and ready to serve in any way possible.

Their program in San Diego has an emphasis on counseling.  While they were here, they had opportunities to minister to youth, children, prisoners, people who struggle with addictions, a pastor and community grieving the loss of loved ones, among others.  We saw God touch many lives in special ways through the members of this team.

Discipleship.  This is the 3rd group who has now completed the discipleship class.  We celebrated their accomplishment together at the pool.
Elliot is learning to recognize numbers and letters.  Evan can sit and scoot, and he has two teeth!

I love how the boys are starting to play together a little now and clearly enjoy one another.
Wow!!  There is a lot going on!  Sometimes when I'm home alone with the boys I get frustrated, feel guilty, and think I should be doing more.  It's nice to look back and see some of the ways God has been using us here.

We are glad to be here.  We are thankful for your prayers and your financial support which help to make it all possible.  We are thankful to God for allowing us to serve Him in this way.  There is much more to come in the months and years ahead.

God bless you, Kristin, Joselo, Elliot and Evan
